What Are The Different Types of Pressure Test?

At AHS, we understand the critical importance of pipeline integrity for ensuring operational safety and regulatory compliance. To meet the specific needs of different pipeline materials and installation methods, we offer four distinct types of hydrostatic pressure testing. Each test is designed to address unique characteristics and requirements of different pipelines.

Type I Pressure Tests

Type I hydrostatic pressure testing is specifically designed for rigid and non-elastic pipeline materials such as ductile iron, stainless steel, and glass reinforced plastic (GRP).

The cornerstone of Type I testing at AHS Pipeline Innovation is the Water Added Machine, a bespoke piece of equipment that allows for the precise control of water volume added to the pipeline during the test. This machine is equipped with measurement instruments that monitor and adjust the water volume in real-time.

During a Type I test, the pipeline is first filled with water, and brought to system test pressure (STP). The Water Added Machine will then incrementally add water throughout the test to compensate for any detected pressure drops. Each addition is precisely measured and recorded, providing a detailed profile of the pipeline’s ability to maintain pressure. This process not only identifies whether leaks are present but also helps in pinpointing the location of leaks based on the volumes of water added.

Type II Pressure Tests

Type II hydrostatic pressure testing is tailored for testing pipe materials that exhibit visco-elastic properties, such as polyethylene. These materials are known to expand under pressure—a behavior termed ‘creep’—which can complicate the detection of leaks. Type II testing is crucial for distinguishing between actual leaks and the natural expansion of the material due to high pressure.

This test involves a carefully controlled pressurization of the pipeline while monitoring both the pressure and the physical dimensions of the pipe. Advanced algorithms are employed to analyse the data collected during the test, which helps in differentiating between the expansion caused by creep and genuine leaks. This is particularly important because visco-elastic materials can distort the true outcomes of a test if not properly accounted for.

10-Minute Pressure Test

Exclusive to AHS, the 10-Minute pressure test is specifically tailored for rapid assessment, ideal for rehabilitated PE pipelines installed using trenchless techniques like sliplining or pipe bursting. This method provides a quick and effective testing solution, perfect for situations where minimal disruption to water supply is essential. It uses specialized equipment to maintain STP accurately while allowing for immediate identification of any issues, thereby saving time and resources.

Service Connection Pressure Test

The Service Connection test is our solution for small diameter connections, typically ranging from 25mm to 32mm, running from a main pipeline to residential or commercial properties. This test utilizes a specialized pump to create a vacuum, aiding in air removal and enhancing the detection of even the smallest leaks. This method aligns with updated UK water industry regulations, providing a more rigorous and quantifiable analysis compared to traditional visual inspection methods.

At AHS Pipeline Innovation, we understand that each pipeline project comes with its unique set of requirements and challenges. Choosing the right type of hydrostatic pressure test is crucial to ensuring the pipeline’s integrity and compliance with industry standards. Our team of experts is committed to working closely with clients to determine the most appropriate testing method for their specific project needs.
